Description of all orientation events are listed below. There’s going to be a lot going on! All events are included on the GGAPSS calendar which is posted on this website’s homepage– from there, you can easily subscribe to the GGAPSS calendar so that all orientation events are automatically added to your personal calendar.

Wednesday August 31st – Tri-Campus TA Day

9am-5pm, Bahen Centre – 40 St. George St. Main Floor

For those first-contract TAs who are going to miss the September 8th or September 29th TA Training sessions, you can attend this session to acquire your job training. Registration and departmental approval required: http://tatp.utoronto.ca/events/tri-campus-ta-day/

Tuesday September 6th – Department orientation + get oriented around student space, get your desk, keys, ID and computer lab access

2:30-5pm, Sid Smith Hall, 100 St. George St.

Join your cohort peers and faculty for the afternoon and get oriented to your program and department. Each cohort will rotate through various stations designed to set you up for the year.

Dept Session: Join your cohort peers and faculty for program specific information.

Bios: This will be a one-stop shop to help you easily create a profile on the department’s website.

Keys/ID: Sign out your office keys and find out where to get your UofT ID.

Space Tour: Find your office, and visit common social, study, work, and printing spaces for Geography students.

Thursday September 8th – TA Training for First-Contract TAs

9am-12pm, SS1084

GGR/ PLA specific TATP Training for first contract training. This training is mandatory for all new TAs at UofT. If you cannot attend this session, alternative session are held on August 31st and September 29th.

Thursday September 8th – CUPE Lunch and Info Session

12-1pm, SS1084

Get to know your fellow CUPE members and hear from your CUPE 3902 Department Stewards, including a brief history about CUPE 3902, while fuelling up before this afternoon’s campus walking tour.

Thursday September 8th – Critical Campus Tour

1:30-4:30pm, Meet in the Taylor Room, Sid Smith Hall, 100 St. George St.

Join critical geographer and PhD student Adam Zendel for a department-renowned Critical Walking Tour of the University of Toronto campus, followed by a pint at the GSU pub.

Thursday September 8th – GGAPSS Pub Gathering

5:30-7:30, GSU Pub, 16 Bancroft Ave, 2nd Floor,

Join GGAPSS representatives and fellow students at the GSU Pub (Harvest Noon) for a 5:30-7:30 social.

Friday September 9th – International Student Meet and Greet

10:30-11:30am, Taylor Room, Sid smith Hall, 100 St. George St.

Join us in the Taylor room for a casual coffee hour to meet other international students. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided!

Tuesday September 13th, MANDATORY Anti-O and Mental Health info session

3-5pm, BA1130, 40 St. George St

This session is divided in two portions. First, a mandatory anti-oppression workshop for incoming students. As graduate students, it is important to examine the ways in which we interact with our students and colleagues and navigate our various roles and identities within academic spaces. Join us in this workshop for conversations and exercises on privilege and positionality as a graduate student. This will be followed by a mental health info session providing an overview of the resources available to students on-campus, off-campus, health coverage, and more.

Tuesday September 13th – Department Pub Night

6-9pm, Victory Cafe, 581 Markham St, Toronto, ON M6G 2L7

Join students and Faculty for the first Department-Wide Social of the year. Time and Location TBD.

Thursday September 15th – Bike and Brew tour

4-7pm, Meet on Sid Smith Patio (Huron St. side)

Join us for a west Toronto bike tour that will show off some of the city’s most interesting bits of bike infrastructure while we hit local breweries along the way.

Planning Alumni Committee (PAC) fall social

6-9pm, Duke of York Pub, 39 Prince Arthur Ave

An opportunity to mingle with other planning students and meet planning program alumni in a casual setting. Snacks will be provided!

Friday September 16th, GGAPSS coffee and intro session

1:30-2:15, SS2125, Sid Smith Hall, 100 St. George St.

Join fellow graduate students from the department for coffee, tea, snacks, and an hanging out.  We will have a photo booth set up and guidance to help create your profile on the department website, if you have not done so already.

Friday September 16th, – GGAPSS main info session

2:15-3pm, SS2125, Sid Smith Hall, 100 St. George St.

This session will provide an overview of GGAPSS’ mandate, structure, main committees and initiatives as well we open positions for the upcoming fall election.

Friday September 16th – RAship, Supervisor and Funding session

3-5 pm, SS2125, Sid Smith Hall, 100 St. George St.

This session will cover the basics of your funding package, things to consider as you plan for the coming years, as well as a presentation of history of RAships in the department and how they work. This session will conclude with discussions around how to navigate relationships with your supervising committee. Feel free to come and go and access the specific session you need.

Saturday 24th – Bonfire

7:30pm, Dufferin Grove Park, Main fire pit

Meet at Dufferin Grove at 7:30pm for a bonfire with other graduate students from all programs in the department.  Bring beverages and musical instruments.  GGAPSS will provide some homemade beer, non-alcoholic beverages, and s’more stuff.

September 29th- TA Training make-up session for first-contract TAs

10am-12pm, additional sessions from 12:15-2:30pm (location TBD)

‘Catch-all’ Social Sciences and Humanities TA Training for new TAs who missed the September 8th TATP training. Registration and departmental approval required: http://tatp.utoronto.ca/event/job-training-hss-sept29/
